Neurodiverse Couples Therapy in Texas and Florida

Neurodiversity Affirming Couples Therapy That Actually Understands Your Relationship and Brain

Specialized relationship support for ADHD, Autism, OCD,
and other forms of innate and acquired neurodivergence

You love each other—but your relationship feels harder than it should.

You may feel like you’re speaking completely different languages. One of you shuts down, the other escalates. Conversations turn into confusion, disconnection, or hurt—no matter how hard you try. Then you are left feeling misunderstood and disconnected.

If one or both of you are neurodivergent (ADHD, autistic, AuDHD, OCD, or otherwise), traditional couples therapy often misses what’s really happening.

This is a space where your brains—and your relationship—are understood. We specialize in neurodiverse couples therapy that is affirming and understanding of your unique operating systems and lived experiences.

WHAT IS A NEURODIVERSE COUPLE?

A neurodiverse relationship is a relationship that has different neurotypes present, and where one or both partners are neurodivergent. A neurodivergent couple would be a couple where each partner has the same neurotype (i.e. both are AuDHD-ers).

Neurotypical is one neurotype, and neurodivergent includes many neurotypes with neurodifferences like ADHD, Autism, OCD, Tic Conditions, Narcolepsy, and more.

The neurodifferences are a part of each person’s unique operating system and influence:

  • communication styles
  • emotional processing
  • sensory needs
  • executive functioning
  • intimacy and connection

WHY TRADITIONAL COUPLES THERAPY FALLS SHORT HERE

Most couples therapy assumes both partners:

  • process emotions similarly
  • communicate in the same ways
  • have equal capacity

That’s often not true in neurodiverse couples and neurodivergent relationships. Every neurodifferent operating system is unique with individualized strengths and support needs, even if people technically have the same neurotype. It’s important to find a therapist who understands and keeps this in mind. That’s why you may benefit from specialized neurodiverse couples therapy.

Your relationship isn’t broken, and neither is your brain.

The framework you’ve been given probably just wasn’t built for your unique brains and operating systems.

OUR APPROACH

At Head & Heart Integrative Psychotherapy, we take a neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed, and relational approach. In addition to years of training, all of our therapists are neurodivergent and have lived experience navigating neurodiverse relationships.

We strive to help couples understand their own and each other’s unique operating systems better.

Understanding our own and our loved ones’ neural operating systems helps to build awareness which leads to greater acceptance and compassionate action. From that place, positive change can occur within ourselves and in our relationships with our partners.
